Number 2....................

Number 2......................

So, a few years ago some of you know I got to number 2 in the Japanese single charts with my track “My name is Supergirl”.....Did I want to be number 1? Of course, who wouldn’t?

It got me thinking about other areas in my life and where I am positioned. Until now I had always been 2nd in department and was not happy about being in that position either. Now I am about to become number 1 and have my own number 2 so I should be happy right?

I came 2nd in the county 400m race when I was 13 and was more than happy until someone said

“it’s not the winning its the taking part that counts”

From that point on I wanted to be number 1.

I'm a Gemini....the twins, that's 2

I live in flat 11...1+1=2

( perhaps that's taking it a bit "2" far!)

In the words of a close friend “internet dating is a game of numbers”, if that is the case I should have won the lottery by now or maybe found “the one”. As most of us seem to have had at least a few “ones” and thought ,this is it. It is a wonderful feeling to know you are number one in someone’s life and not so easy being number 2; it is often hard to understand particularly if sometimes you are made to feel like number 1.

The point I am making is that although we often think place ourselves as number 1 in so many areas of our lives, the people around us may see us as very differently according to their own individual numbering systems.

Whilst I’m not saying we are all just numbers, I think what I’m saying does add up....and my score is usually to 2....

Your thoughts?

Time.....2 time

Hello dear friends

I got to thinking about "time" the other day ....I seem to have so very little of it these days.

I was having a coffee with a friend last week and we began to talk about how long things take to do and how people always seem to say "I don't have time to talk"...bottom line is we all have time but choose how to prioritise and spend it.

I have compiled a list of activities and how quickly one can attend to them

1. Send a text - between 5 and 30 seconds
2. Send an email- between 5 and 30 seconds
3. Call someone and say "hello, how's your day"- between 5 and 30 seconds
4. Leave a voicemail- between 5 and 30 seconds
5. Send an IM- between 5 and 30 seconds
5. Take a pee- between 20 seconds and a minute

My point- quoting my friend who shall remain anonymous ( and he's a guy)..

" There's always time to contact someone even if it comes down to doing it when I'm taking a pee"

love that...and it still makes me smile.

Bottom line- it's a sad time when we can't take 5 seconds or so...lifes too short

A different London...

Over the past few months I have seen and experienced a wide range of gems that I knew existed in London but hadn't taken the time to enjoy. A large part of this process has been 1) a reaction to those around me hauling my arse to weird and wonderful places, 2) random findings on my travels and 3) just taking time out to look beyond the obvious....I have compiled a list below.

I highly recommend you to visit, enjoy and comment....

1. Bowling at County Hall.(cold beer a must)

2. The 14th hole at Trent Park golf club. (great view)

3. My choreography project performed at Kings Place (incredibly cool venue).

4. Running in Kingswood Park (weird pond)

5. Drinking Chardonnay (£3.50 a glass) at The Banana Bar, Walworth Road, Elephant and Castle area.(drunk man who says you are indcredibly sexy) even if you are with someone who looks like they might be your partner ...

6. Brunch at "The breakfast club" in Islington, (excellent huevos rancheros)

7. Headlines hair salon, Camden Road. (Sandra number 2 for the best blow dry ever)

8 Putting at Wimbledon golf club.

9. A knickerbocker Glory at Marine Ices, Chalk Farm. ( just peachy!)

10. Cycling up to the top of Hampstead heath and falling asleep in the sun.(on a pink bike)

Not all of the above are to everyones taste but they each in their own way stirred me into publishing this post....enjoy fellow Londonites...

Excellent red wine, radishes with cocktails and a restaurant in a hanger...

This is just a quick post whilst I have a rare moment of freedom.....

In the last few months I have travelled a fair bit and experienced a variety of amazing and somewhat different cuisines in both traditional and unusual locations. Below are just a few experiences

1. August 2008 : Dinner at The Stratosphere Hotel, Las Vegas.

1000 feet or so in the air, seating is in a glass dome with a revolving floor, quite possibly the best views and an excellent dessert menu!( see example above!)

2. September 2008 : Exhibition at Phillips De Pury Gallery, London

Excellent location, enormous clean open space with an amazing exhibition nicely accompanied by good champagne and the best sashimi Hors D'oeurves I have had in a while!

3. October 2008 : BUCHAREST.....2 amazing Restaurants here

i) Balthazar : Fantastically cool interior and probably the best red wine I have had for quite some time, unfortunately not a bottle that one could probably find in the UK. It was devilishly rich and full bodied, quite delightful.

ii) Casa Isoletta : Set on a lake, a wonderful up market yet low key restaurant serving the most amazing fish that melted in the mouth...WOW!

4. December 2008 : London...OQO Bar, Islington

Mid week, low lighting, great seating, extensive cocktail list. After 2 great mojitos thhe bar man came over personally and asked what he could make for me! I told him sweet yet sour and he returned with an exquisite blend of fruits and measures of delicious unknown forms of alcohol topped with fresh passion fruit...delicious and intoxicating!

5. February 2009 : Zurich..Goethe Bar ( Shiller )

2 EXPERIENCES!

i) Cocktails- Amazing Mojito with just the right amount of mint and sugar and served with raw radishes and salt!! I was a little apprehensive but actually rather impressed with the blend of flavours...a must try!

ii) Breakfast- Ouefs Florentine

I returned the next day for a delicious breakfast. The egg was done to perfection with the freshest spinach and buttery toast, an amazing start to the day...Highly recommended!

6. February 2009 : Zurich .. Runway 34

What a location for a restaurant...An actual hanger close to Zurich Airport that has been turned into a restaurant complete with real life plane ( now a smoking bar) in the middle!! The best part is the drinks being served on proper plane trolleys!! A unique experience!

I hope you have enjoyed the above and feel free to comment!!

The return of 'The Stepford wives???

After returning from yet another dull event in the city last week I got to thinking about a pattern I see emerging; let me explain…..

Last year I watched the episode ‘Ex and the city’ from the TV show Sex and the city (Season 2, episode 18) for the 6th or 7th time. I felt compelled to go out and buy the film The way we were.

In Sex and the city, Carrie had finally become ‘friends’ with Mr Big who felt obliged to invite her to his engagement party to the waspy ‘Natasha’. Carrie cannot bring herself to go and subsequently drowns her sorrows with the rest of the gang at a nearby bar. The discussion turns to the similarities between Carrie and the Barbara Streisand character Katie in The way we were.

I will give you a quick overview:

Hubble (Robert Redford) was madly in love with Katie; she was complicated, wild, free spirited, artistic (and probably great between the sheets). Their relationship was complex, passionate, challenging and exciting ( so of course he ended it)….Years later he ends up with ' Rachel' ; uncomplicated, straight hair, sensible job, compliant…. runs into Katie and realises he still loves her.

In Sex and the city, Mr Big also lives to regret marrying what I would label as a ‘Stepford wife’ and starts having an affair with Carrie again.

“The label ‘Stepford wife’ is usually applied to a woman who seems to conform blindly to an old-fashioned role in relationship to her husband, compared to other, presumably more independent and vivacious women.” (Wikipedia).

It would appear that although these women look and act the part that men will eventually tire of them. Based on recent observations from my 30 something single friends, it appears that a lot of men fear strong, independent, “different” women (although they will date them and have great sex). Ultimately the “Stepford wife” will usually be the one waltzing down the aisle in the perfect white meringue dress.

As I looked around the room in the chic city bar, I was surrounded by a sea of couples; perfect looking women nibbling on hideous hors d'oeuvres wearing well coutured suits and sensible shoes. These women were looking adoringly at their bored looking ageing husbands with dodgy looking hair, wandering eyes and wonky ties…I wondered, had these men fallen prey to the ‘Stepford wife’ phenomenon? There wasn’t one interesting, different looking woman, indeed they all looked pretty much the same…hair, clothes, expression (or lack of it).

I don’t want to generalise in regard to the above but it is not the first time I have seen this and it won’t be the last. I have met a lot of men and many of them tell me

“I’m looking for a strong, independent and quirky woman”

Alas, around 70% of these men have followed Hubble and opted for Miss Stepford (divorces have followed).

I myself am definitely a “Katie” (perhaps that’s why I’m still single?!). I don’t work in an office and wear suits or sensible shoes ( I have a lot of very insensible ones including some great CFM boots) and I have curly hair (sometimes).I am fiercely independent and have an opinion that I’m not afraid to show (sometimes inappropriately!) .

I am very happy being more the ‘Katie’ type, however I spent a lot of time thinking that I was too quirky and different. I have no desire to ‘dumb down’ and become a Stepford apprentice to bag a man (even if he is over 6 foot). Ironically although only a TV show, Mr Big did end up marrying Carrie(although 4 years later and he did jilt her first).

I leave you with Carries line to Mr Big (in regard to Natasha)

“Your girl is lovely Hubble”, she replied “I don’t understand”, he replied

“and you never will” she replied……
